About The Author

Al Ramsawack: Our Flagship Author

The late Al Ramsawack (1932–2021) stands as Caribbean Publishing House’s flagship author because of his unparalleled contribution to the preservation and celebration of Trinidad and Tobago’s folklore and culture. As a folklorist, educator, broadcaster, artist, and storyteller, Ramsawack spent over five decades collecting and sharing the rich oral traditions of the Caribbean through more than 300 stories across newspaper columns, books, radio, and television. His writings brought to life beloved characters and mythic figures such as the Soucouyant, Papa Bois, La Diablesse, Douens, and many others, deeply embedding them into the literary imagination of the nation and the region.

Ramsawack’s work not only preserved diverse cultural narratives rooted in Amerindian, African, East Indian, French, and Spanish influences but also helped shape a uniquely Caribbean literary identity for children and adults alike. His recognition with the Trinidad and Tobago President’s Hummingbird Silver Medal underscores his cultural impact.
At Caribbean Publishing House, we honour his legacy as our flagship author and look forward to expanding our roster of voices across the Caribbean islands, uplifting more storytellers who reflect the vibrant traditions, histories, and imaginations of our region.

These stories explore the tales of supernatural occurrences and encounters with forest-dwelling folklore characters from this twin island state in the Caribbean. The author’s compelling style of narration evokes dramatic images of his story characters in a nostalgic return to Trinidad and Tobago’s past.
